Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is not a manga of horror genre but the demons introduced in this storyline add a layer of creepiness to the story on the basis of their appearance, backstories and powers. The main group of demons in Demon Slayer is the Twelve Kizuki.
the Twelve Kizuki, serve under Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, and are among the most powerful and terrifying demons in the series. The Twelve Kizuki are divided into two groups: the Upper Ranks and the Lower Ranks. The Upper Ranks are the strongest and most dangerous demons in Muzan’s army, with each one possessing terrifying abilities and a deep, twisted nature. This category includes the most obnoxious and frightening demons, but the show also introduces other demons that, despite lacking an official rank, still leave a chilling impression.

The Heartless Demon of All- Muzan
Crossed Limits of Cruelty
The only thing that matters to Muzan is power. When he was a human, he fell severely ill and weak. The doctors were trying hard to treat him, but, when Muzan saw no betterment in his condition, he committed suicide out of frustration.
He casually killed random people and used their bodies as a vessel. When any of the lower-rank demons failed to obey any of his commands, he would behead them on the spot. He is the most scariest and dangerous demon because other demons still have some humanity or fear in their hearts but Muzan doesn’t. He can do the most brutal and harsh actions without any second thought.
He turns kind-hearted people into ruthless monsters, without feeling any guilt or fear while doing so. Many demons were once, kind-hearted people, who were mercilessly turned into a brutal monster by Muzan. He didn’t even spare the doctor who was treating his illness when he was a human. What further contributes to his brutality, is his immense power and strength.
Hashira’s powers are of great strength. Once, all Hashiras charged at him using their highest level breathing forms, in response to which, he even trapped all the Demon Slayer Corps into the infinity castle along with the Hashira. As the Demon King, his manipulative, cold-hearted nature, combined with his indestructible body and genius intelligence, makes him the most terrifying demon of all.
The Master of Spider Family, Rui
No Mercy Even for the Family
After Muzan, the most merciless demon is Rui. He had an abusive family when he was a human led him to an unhealthy obsession with having a family leading him to create a twisted Spider Family. However, having an unhappy family life as a human doesn’t justify his cruel methods of forming his new family. He would deceive people and make them trust him. Once they started trusting him, he would convert them into monsters using Spider’s blood.
These transformed demons were then bound to him, forced to take on roles within his “family.” Every individual in his “family” had to obey him, irrespective of their own will or desires. If anyone disobeyed, the punishment was harsh and unforgiving. Rui’s method of control was not gentle; it was violent and cruel. For instance, his mother was struggling with her new existence as a demon. Instead of understanding her situation, he would strangle her with his demonic spider strings, making her wish secretly for his death.
The way he managed to instill fear in every member of his spider family. His behavior was cold, ruthless, and intimidating, which led the other demons to fear him. Rui never showed concern for the well-being of those he transformed into demons. The life of those trapped in Rui’s so-called family was nothing less than a nightmare.
His Ruthlessness was severe enough, that once when two of his elder sisters tried to escape from this pathetic life, a sister betrayed the other one and revealed the escape plan before Rui. He didn’t realize the pain that led her to try to escape, instead, he strung the sister up in a web and allowed the sun to scorch her body to ash.
The Distorted Body Demon, Gyutaro
Disdain for the World and Siblinghood
Gyutaro made his first appearance, coming out physically from Daki’s body. The moment he reveals himself, the most immediately frightening feature is his distorted, grotesque physique. His dark yellow eyes, sharp shark-like teeth, and eerie grin create a chilling image that sets him apart from other demons. His sharp red blood sickles are a menacing weapon he wields with deadly precision.
His backstory is a tragic one, when he was born, his mother tried to murder him. This act of hers induced hatred and disdain in his heart for the world. His extreme thinness is a result of starvation in his early life, and his sickles were the weapons he used to defend both himself and his sister when they were human.
Gyutaro’s goal is rooted in a desire to protect his sister, Daki. And what’s scarier is that he can cross all limits or brittleness to protect his sister. He justifies his merciless action by believing that his love for her makes them compulsory. Gyutaro parallels Tanjiro in this regard as they both are trying to protect their sister. It subtly suggests that not all demons are entirely devoid of humanity. Some, like Gyutaro, are driven by emotions like fear, love, care, and anger, which mirrors those of humans.
The Manipulating Demon, Hantengu
The Emotional Trap
At first, Hantengu appeared as a weak, cowardly, and frightened demon seemingly he could not provide much damage to anyone. However, it is his way of trapping people by appearing harmless before them. His true form is that of a frightened, vulnerable creature, and it’s this appearance, that he uses to deceive others. His tactics and manipulation allowed him to catch Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Muichiro off guard, leading them to believe he was a victim, only to launch a sudden, brutal attack when they least expected it.
He shows himself helpless, afraid, and weak demon before others and harms them brutally at the most unexpected time. And if someone detects and points out his manipulation, he kills the person being indulged in a murderous rage for them. He is an Upper Rank Four demon with seven personalities; Hatred, anger, fear, pleasure, resentment, sorrow, and joy.
With his Blood Demon Art, Hantengu can summon these personalities to overwhelm his opponents, making him a formidable and constantly shifting threat. His ability to transition emotions at will makes him incredibly dangerous, as it’s nearly impossible to predict what he will do next. However, the ultimate combo of Tanjiro, Nezuko, Mitsuri, and Genya defeated him during the Swordsmith Village arc.
The Furious and Brutal Azaka
The Thirst for Fight
Akaza is an Upper Rank Three demon, who defeated the strongest Hashira of demon Slayer, Rengoku during the Mugen Train Arc. What makes this even more terrifying is that Akaza wasn’t even fighting at his full potential. He took Rengoku as a weaker opponent, which shows just how much stronger Akaza is compared to most others.
Rengoku, known for his immense strength and skill, was no match for Akaza, which spells trouble for the other Hashira who will have to face him in the future. Another thing that makes Azaka more dangerous is his Compass Needle. This technique allows him to know the opponent’s will to fight, allowing him to use more calculated moves during the fight.
He can move with the speed of light, quick enough, that he can be in a new position before anyone even realizes it. His speed, combined with his sharp nature, makes him a threat that can overpower his enemies before they have a chance to react.
Akaza’ is constantly hungry for a fight. This stubborn, and rebellious nature leads him to challenge authority. This is evident in his interactions with other demons, particularly in the Infinity Castle. Akaza holds a grudge against Doma, who is ranked higher than him, and their confrontation shows just how volatile he can be. In a fit of rage, Akaza cuts off Doma’s mouth and then beheads him.
Doma, unbothered by the attack, simply smiles and claims that he doesn’t mind, which only serves to infuriate Akaza further. This outburst reveals not only Akaza’s violent nature but also his frustration and jealousy against Doma’s rank.
The Corpse Obsessed Demon, Gyokko
The Creepy Obsession
Before becoming a demon, Gyokko was far from a saint. His parents died drowning in the sea. After their death, he developed a violating obsession with corpses. In a fit of his obsession, he killed a child and stuffed its body in a vase. In response, the child’s parents stabbed Gyokko with a knife. Later on, Muzan found him and turned him into a demon.
As a demon, his physical appearance is as disturbing as his past. His body is in a damaged and broken form, protruding unnaturally from a vase, giving him an alien-like appearance. His body is dotted with tiny, malformed hands, with an unsettling face, his eyes are replaced by mouths, and his mouth is an eye. He sees his body as an art piece. In any failure to receive praise for his body, he, in a fit of rage murders his victims and distorts their bodies, believing he is creating something beautiful.
Growing up in a fishing village, his body possesses fish-like features, with tentacles like that of a merman’s, a haunting reminder of his past. His gruesome art and his disturbing perception are likely fueled by his childhood experiences and the grief he carries from losing his parents to the ocean. His rage and desire for control over others are visible through the way he kills. When fighting his opponents, Gyokko traps them in a vase filled with water, drowning them as a form of torture.
The Psychotic Demon, Enmu
The Joy to see Others Suffer
When Enmu witnessed the murders of Lower Rank demons, he was determined to kill Tanjiro. As he was the top lower-rank demon, the power to hypnotize and control other’s dreams. In the Mugen Train Arc, Enmu uses this power to put Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu, and Rengoku all under his control, trapping them in their dreams. He’s a kind of psychotic Lower Rank demon who loves to see people as well as demons suffering or being killed.
He gleefully watches as Muzan kills other Lower-Rank demons, even seeing it as a “dream” to be killed by him, showing how twisted his perception of reality is. He is an extremely pathetic demon as he is not even sincere to his own kind and feels joy in seeing other demons suffer mentally or physically. He was a doctor and used his hypnosis powers to ensure dying patients of their well being, just for the sake of his enjoyment.
His masochistic tendencies further cement his insanity, as he relishes receiving Muzan’s blood during the transformation process, even though it is painful. Enmu’s willingness to endure the pain simply because it brings him pleasure shows how far gone he is, mentally and morally.
Demon of the Ice, Doma
The Unsettling Calm Smile
The demon responsible for transforming Daki and Gyutaro into demons is Doma. His first appearance is enough to give goosebumps as he is seen wearing a woman’s severed leg draped over his shoulders, with her blood staining the corners of his mouth, with a disturbingly serene smile. This calm smile in the face of such brutality highlights, how mysterious, twisted, and sadistic Doma truly is. Unlike other demons who may show signs of anger or aggression, Doma’s cold, almost detached nature makes him all the more unsettling.
Using his Blood Demon Art, Doma can summon and control ice, using it to create dangerous weapons as well as traps for his opponents or victims. His ice attacks can also act as poison spreading in the air, killing the individual who inhales that air. As an Upper Moon Two demon, Doma possesses physical strength that complements his deadly abilities. He is the second-highest-ranked demon in Muzan’s hierarchy, and his strength reflects this position.
His calm and sadistic nature, along with his lethal ice-based powers and immense strength, make him a dangerous and terrifying opponent for anyone in the Demon Slayer Corps. His ability to manipulate the environment to his advantage, along with his ability to poison his enemies, makes him a unique threat.
